System Boilers
What are the differences &
benefits of a system boiler?
System boilers, often referred to as ‘closed vent’ or ‘sealed system’ boilers, need a hot water cylinder. Unlike regular boilers, however, they don’t need a cold water tank.
And another key difference with regular boilers is the housing of components, such as pumps and valves, in the body of a system boiler.
Again, your decision on system boilers will depend on the size and type of your property and the number of people you live with.
Pros of system boilers
- Better for larger homes – as with regular boilers, system boilers are worth considering if you have more than one bathroom and people often needing to use hot water at the same time
- Space savers – you won’t need the space for a large cold water tank in the loft, so an advantage over regular boilers
Cons of system boilers
- Need more space than a combi boiler – you’ll still need to find room for a hot water cylinder
- No instant hot water guaranteed – either plan ahead or wait for the water in the cylinder to heat up
- Temporary hot water shortages – system boilers are not the best choice if your home typically has lots of people using hot water at the same time
- Less energy efficient – you’ll lose heat from the stored hot water in the hot water cylinder
